There are two types of institutions that offer online courses; established brick and mortar institutions and schools that are exclusively online. When considering either, you should check their accreditation status. The exclusively online institutions will most commonly seek accreditation through DETC (The Distance Education and Training Council). Additionally both types will usually seek regional accreditation to establish themselves as quality institutions. These levels of accreditation may also effect whether other schools will accept transfer credits from an institution. Generally speaking online degrees are as well respected as those obtained from traditional brick and mortar institutions. The Federal Government recognizes degrees from accredited online institutions.

In 2006–07, there were about 11,200 college-level education programs that were designed to be totally completed through distance learning. 66% of these programs were college degree programs and the remaining 34% were certificate programs. Not every distance learning degree or certificate is accredited and/or eligible for federal student financial aid.
